Theology is important. but not really. well, its an important endeavor, and its goals can be pretty good. but mostly its a way for insecure man to gain confidence about his faith, or lack of it. theology’s primary function of causing man to ponder God is perhaps among the noblest of all the works of faith. but man spends too much time making sure he is right, making sure the facts line up. all the while, its still a guess as to whether he has it ‘right.’ when man believes he is right, and his brother believes something different, but equally right about areas of theology we are nearing division territory. perhaps both are wrong, perhaps both are right and together they have a fuller picture of who God is and what God wants to do. by being different, and loving one another; by serving the same Lord, and working together; differences in encyclopedic theology don’t really matter. churches shouldn’t be built around who is right theologically, but rather around the desire of Jesus followers to seek Him first and spread His kingdom through love and work. I may be different in my theology than the man right next to me, but we should challenge each other on why we are different and continue to work together in love and harmony, in faith and piousness. Perhaps Loving God and pondering Him are all the theology we really need. Perhaps the Creeds have it all settled 1500 years ago.

i actually had a lengthy conversation at work today with my boss/friend about almost this exact topic. theology is great, but 99% of all Christian, Bible-based theology should take a distant backseat to the work of Loving God and Loving Others. My boss/friend described it this way: “If it’s not something missionaries debate on the front lines of the mission field, it’s probably not worth breaking fellowship over” interesting.
